Project Description
The South Side Health and Vitality Studies’ Community Resource Mapping System currently includes all non-residential establishments in six neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago (Hyde Park, Washington Park, North Kenwood, Grand Boulevard, Woodlawn and East Side). This effort involves partners from cross-disciplinary teams at the University of Chicago, South Side-based community organizations and community members. The first wave of data collection was completed at the end of August 2009 and the information is already being put to work. Community organizations, students, and urban planners are using the Resources database as a tool for planning programs and identifying assets and needs in these six communities. Using this website, you can create maps from the data to see where all the resources are in these communities. This project has been carried out to advance knowledge about communities on the South Side of Chicago. We expect this information will be useful to many, for example: individuals looking for services, researchers studying how community resources relate to health and vitality of communities, and community-based organizations seeking to identify areas of need.
Who is working on the South Side Chicago Resource Mapping System?
The team includes South Side residents, some of whom are members of our Community Advisory Board, and University of Chicago staff and faculty who have worked on improving health and well-being for their entire careers.

Who is funding this work?
This work is part of the South Side Health and Vitality Studies (directed by Dr. Stacy Lindau), which is funded by the University of Chicago Medical Center Biological Sciences Division, and Office of the Urban Health Initiative, led by Dr. Eric E. Whitaker, MD, MPH. In order to keep this project going and growing to include all of the South Side communities, we are actively looking for sources of support. Recently, the project received support from the Walter G. Zoller Memorial Fund at the University of Chicago to identify oral health resources in the community.
