Project Description
The South Side Resource Mapping project was created to learn more about all South Side of Chicago communities. The work is a partnership between the University of Chicago’s South Side Health and Vitality Studies, South Side community organizations and community members. Currently, the Resource Mapping project has collected information about businesses and organizations in the following South Side communities:
- Auburn Gresham
- East Side
- Englewood
- Grand Boulevard
- Hyde Park
- Kenwood
- South Chicago
- South Shore
- Washington Park
- West Englewood
- Woodlawn
This information is on the website Southsidehealth.org (what you are looking at right now). With this website you can create maps to find resources and businesses in these communities. We believe the information will help people find services they need, determine how community resources relate to the health and vitality of communities, and help community organizations identify areas of need.
The project began in August 2009 by collecting information in six communities – East Side, Grand Boulevard, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Washington Park, and Woodlawn. Since then, community organizations and members, students, and urban planners are using the Resource Mapping data to plan programs and identify resources and needs in these six communities.
In 2010-2011, we are expanding the project in the following ways:
- Updating the information collected in the original six communities
- Collecting service-based information for all existing businesses in the six communities
- Adding Auburn Gresham, Englewood, South Chicago, South Shore, and West Englewood
We are excited about the progress being made, and we hope you are, too!
